The above visa was issued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on June 19, 1940.

Alexander LIBERMAN was a prominent painter and sculptor who became the artistic director of Vogue magazine and Conde Nast. He crossed into Portugal with his future wife, the fashion designer Tatiana Yacovleff DU PLESSIX, and her daughter Francine DU PLESSIX. Together they sailed from Lisbon to New York on the vessel Carvalho Araujo in January 1941. Francine, who became the writer Francine DU PLESSIX GRAY recounts the family’s exodus in her book, Them.
