The numbered visas above were issued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on June 18, 1940. Sousa Mendes requested a visa for Joseph SLYPER in a telegram to Salazar, the Portuguese head of state.
The Slyper family, Dutch citizens, crossed into Portugal. Ezechiel and Rachel SLYPER crossed into Portugal and subsequently sailed on the Quanza from Lisbon to New York in August 1940.
